Before starting this tutorial, let’s take a look at our final image. This image is based one of the scene in Spongebob movie. Before doing this tutorial, make sure to search for some reference from google.
Step 1: Spongebob Front Face
Let’s start with front face of Spongebob. Use pen tool to draw this shape. Make sure that the corners is not sharp but has a small curves.
Click Effect > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag. This effect will add wavy line onto the lines. Klik Object > Expand.
This shaoe is still too rough gor spongebob. We still need to do manual editing. Use pen tool to remove unneeded points, use Direct Selection tool to manually odify wach points. Use yellow for Fill and black for Stroke.
Step 3: Spongebob’s Side
Now move on to other side. As previous step, add Zig Zag effect. Do manual editing to fix the shapeand move it to back by pressing Ctrl + [.
Step 4: Eye
Start by drawing a white ellipse and draw a blue circle inside it. Inside the circle draw another black circle. Create three straight lines with Stroke 2 pt for Spongebob eyelashes.
Duplicate Spongebob’s eye. Move it to right. Right click and choose Transform > Reflect and choose Vertical. Use scale tool to make the right eye smaller.
Step 6: Holes
To create holes, use ellipse tool. Repeat this process until we have few holes.
Step 7: Hand
Draw Spongebob’s sleeve. Draw a curve for his hand with Stroke 5 pt. Click Object > Expand. Change Fill color to yellow.
Manually, use pen tool to draw Spongebob’s hand.
Select hand and its arm. In Pathfinder panel choose Unite to combine both shape. Create a black ellipse and put it behind its arm.
Draw another sleeve. Duplicate left hand and place it behind the sleeve.
Step 11: Pants
Draw a white box on front of Spongebob. Click Draw Inside icon.
Note: This feature is only available in Illustrator CS5. You can change the technique using Clipping Mask in previous version of Illustrator.
In Draw Inside mode, we can directly draw inside the shape. Using pen tool draw a brown rectangle. Draw another four rectangle for his belt. Once you’re finish, double click outside the pants to return to normal mode. Place the pants behind Spongebob.
Use same technique to draw other side of Spongebob’s pants.
Using pen tool, draw lower part of Spongebob’s pants.
Step 15: Left leg
Draw this shape. Don not connect indicated points. This way, we have an open shape.
Draw a curve with Stroke: 5 pt. Click Object > Expand. Change Fill color to yellow.
Move his leg to behind his pants.
Use pen tool to draw shoe. Add an ellipse on top of it for its highlight.
Select his leg. Enter Draw Inside mode and draw white sock with two lines, red and blue, on top of it.
Draw the other pant.
Draw leg using previously mentioned steps. Draw a line then click Expand.
Manually, draw a shoe on top of it. Again, draw lower part of the shoe. That part is made of three shapes. Also drwa an ellipse for its highlight.
Create a curve 5 pt line. See picture below for its placement. Click Object > Expand. Delete unneeded points to get a crescent shape.
Select its leg. Enter Draw Inside mode. Draw white sock and draw two lines on top of it, blue and red.
Step 24: Mouth
Let’s start drawing smile on Spongebob’s face.
Enter Draw Inside mode. Draw his teeth and throat.
Draw his tongue. In the middle of the tongue, draw a triangle shape separating left and right part of the tongue.
Step 27: Nose
Use pen tool to draw his nose.
Step 28: Lips edge
Draw a 1 pt curve line next to his lips edge. Click Expand > Object. Delete unneeded point until we have a crescent shape.
Step 29: Pimple
Using same previous technique, draw a red line, add Expand, and modify its points. Add some red ellipse inside for his pimple.
Duplicate pimple and place it on other side of his face. Rearrange the position of the ellipse shape to keep it unique.
Step 31: Tie
Don’t miss on Spongebob’s formal tie! It’s very easy to create it. Just draw a white shape, then send it behind. This is going to be his collar. Next, draw two red polygon for his tie.
Step 32: Shadow
Create a circle with black to transparent gradient.
Use scale tool to change circle shadow and put it under Spongebob’s shoe.
Duplicate previous shadow, this time try to make bigger and put it under Spongebob. Reduce transparency to 22%.
