In this tutorial, we will create an iron name plate with emboss text inside it. This plate will be screwed to a wooden texture. All objects in the image is made entirely in Photoshop. You will learn how to create vector shapes in Photoshop and combine it with layer styles.
Before move on, let’s look at the picture that we’re going to create here.
Step 1: Create Wood Texture
Create new file with size 640×480 px. Change foreground ccolor to #c88820 and background to #b86e25. Hit Alt + Delete to fill background with foreground. Click Filter > Render > Fibers. Use Variance: 21 and Strength: 47. Click OK. We will have a wood texture.
Click Filter > Liquify. Use tool bloat, pucker, and other similar tools to create some swirl on the texture. After you done, click OK.
Double click layer and add layer style Gradient Overlay. Choose black to white gradient, type radial, use low opacity. Click-drag inside the picture to move gradient center. This layer style will add a subtle lighting on the texture and give it more realistic look.
Step 4: Create Metallic Plate
Activate rounded rectangle tool with radius 2 px. Choose shape icon int the option bar. Set foreground to white. In the middle of the picture draw a rectangle.
Add these layer styles.
Now, we will add a bit of light reflection on the surface. Create new layer and hit Ctrl + Alt + G to change it to Clipping Mask. Create elliptical selection in top middle then fill it with linear gradient from white to black.
Change reflection’s blend mode to Screen. This way, black will disappeared and only white pixels left.
Create new layer again and press Ctrl + Alt + G. Fill layer with white. Click Filter > Noise > Add Noise.
Click Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and set Angle to 0 with big Distance value.
Change layer’s blend mode to Multiply to leave only dark pixels.
Step 11: Creating Emboss Text
Create text in the middle of the image.
Add these layer styles.
Change fill layer to 0%.
Step 14: Draw Screw
Draw small circle shape in the corner. Add these layer styles.
Duplicate cirle shape we have just created. In its middle add two rounded rectangle paths with 1 px radius. In path option choose Subtract to cut previous shape. Add these layer styles.
Step 16: Duplicate Screw
Select both screw shape. Press Ctrl + G to save it in a group. activate move tool, while holding Alt drag screw to create its duplicate. (TIP: To add realistic look, rotate screw a bit.)
Repeat this step until we have all screws in each corner.
Step 18: Add Lighting Effect
Create a new layer and place on top, above every other layers. Add radial gradient from white to black.
Change layer’s blend mode to Multiply.
Step 20: Final Result
